1984 - George Orwell, Erich Fromm In 1984, the psychotic and monstrous evil of the Party strains credulity. Basically, the Party represents man as Satan. I have heard of very few totalitarians in real life who seemed as dogged and irrational in their cruelty or collectivism as O'Brien--"if you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face, forever." The only such figures whom I'm sure would have applauded that are Hitler, Stalin and Saddam Hussein, and they didn't care as much about collectivism.
